about

Born of necessity from the remnants of three highly unsuccessful prog-rock bands, Daffodil Mansions fused together a guitar player, a bass player, a keyboard player and a drummer in time for a European tour over the summer of 1974.

Music entrepreneur and impresario Tony Devine had conceived the tour to promote one of his acts - and sometime lover - Julie Armstrong, and Daffodil Mansions performed both as her backing band and also under their own name. A few weeks into the tour, the Daffodils’ guitarist quit the band and tour manager Norton Salter took over guitar duties and ultimately musical arrangements for Julie.

A highlight of the tour was when the bands performed at an Oktoberfest concert in Munich. Salter impressed the remaining three members of Daffodil Mansions so much that they contacted him the following year to produce and play on their eponymous debut album.

Beset by technical and pharmaceutical-related difficulties, the final project clocked in at around the twenty minute mark - half the length of a full album. Undeterred, Salter persuaded the band to release the project as a "mini-album" on his own label.

An attempt to bake the original master tape reels for the album in order the play them again proved disastrous. However a decent recording has been made from a copy of the original vinyl album, albeit with some low level dust crackle!

More information about this obscure band can be found in the pdf booklet that comes as part of the download.

Daffodil Mansions were a short-lived British prog-rock group. Their sole album of instrumental synthesizer-driven rock failed to chart or win over music critics in 1975. However one of the tracks was used as the theme music for obscure paranormal documentary series ‘Man’s Unknowable World’. ... more
